Rain, snow, mist, and reflections on water often awaken memories of aparticular moment or place through subtle shifts of light and temperature. In "Solidified Air," Taiwanese glass artist Chien-Chih Chen uses blown glass as a vessel for time and perception. Through its transparency, reflection, and fluidity, he evokes landscapes that feel familiar yet remain difficult to define. The repeated processes of heating, turning, and cooling molten glass become traces of light, movement, and memory. The exhibition features the "Water Mirror" series, which draws inspiration from rippling water, reflections, and moonlight, condensing ever-changing landscapes into tangible forms. As light passes through glass, reality and memory, present and past quietly converge.
This work draws inspiration from the western coastal region of Hsinchu, an area where the artist worked for nearly a decade. Along the shoreline, countless wind turbines stand tall, turning year-round against the powerful gusts—gradually becoming a defining feature of the Windy City’s coast.
Wing-like triangular glass pieces are meticulously arranged facing the direction of the wind—some submerged underwater, some floating on the surface, and others suspended mid-sink. The alternating heights and depths mirror the experience of gazing at the coast from varying distances, evoking the everyday nostalgia of surfing, watching the sunset, and strolling along the shore on a weekend afternoon.

Chien Chih Chen
Born in Nantou, Taiwan, Chien-Chih Chen studied Commercial Design at Ming Chuan University before apprenticing under master glassblower Lin Yao-Nung, a designated Cultural Heritage Preserver of Hsinchu City. Grounded in traditional glassblowing techniques, his practice draws inspiration from everyday surroundings and cultural landscapes-such as factory culture, local industries, wetlands, moats, temples, and gardens—focusing on the intersection of the classical and the contemporary, the local and the international. Through the medium of glass, he transforms personal experiences and cultural memories into delicate, poetic works that capture the passage of time.
